Branch Meetings

Most meetings are held in Guelph on the fourth Tuesday of the month, except for the months of July, August, December and January. Meetings begin with Interest Groups (those researching other countries) coffee and cookies and/or conversation at 7:00 p.m., followed at 7:30 with the Guest presentation.

Most meetings are held in the Zehrs Meeting Room, 2nd floor, 1045 Paisley Road, Guelph (map); wheelchair accessible by elevator.

Some presentations are held at the Speaker's location to enable access to the materials available therein. The June meeting is usually held at a more northern location in Wellington County.

Guelph Civic Museum

Our meeting will take place at the newly located Guelph Civic Museum. Bev Dietrich the Museum curator, will lead us on a tour of the new facility and attendees will be given an opportunity to try to determine if there is information at the Museum that will help with their family history research. The branch will present a cheque to the Museum to assist with their efforts to enhance research capabilities in the Museum.

Walking Tour of the main street of Hillsburgh

Lee Tocher, a lifelong resident of Hillsburgh will lead a walking tour of the main street of Hillsburgh. Participants will enjoy learning about the history of Hillsburgh and listening to Lee’s stories about growing up in Hillsburgh in the 1950s and 60s. One building of great interest will be the Exchange Hotel, built in the 1880s and currently being renovated into condos with retail space on the ground floor.

The walking tour will begin at the Hillsburgh Branch Library at 6:30pm and we will return to the library around 7:15. After a short period for refreshments, there will be a short presentation about sources and resources for researching your Ontario ancestors.

Directions: From Guelph follow Eramosa Road north out of Guelph where it becomes Wellington County Road 124. At Brisband, turn left onto Trafalgar Rd/County Road 24 and follow on to Hillsburgh. The Hillsburgh Branch library is located on the left side of the road, across from the Hillsburgh Community Centre and in the same building as the Graham Animal Hospital. Entry is off Trafalgar Rd. or off George St beside the Foodland grocery store. Distance is about 32 km, a ½ hour drive. Parking available at the front, side and back of the library.

Traps and Pitfalls in Genealogical Research

Roberta Clark, who is also OGS Region III Director, will tell us about the problems and pitfalls she has experienced through her many years of exploring her Family History. Roberta will share some good advice on what to avoid and how to solve some brickwall dilemmas.

Members and guests are encouraged to bring an object (photo, book, story, article of clothing, etc.) that has a story related to it that would be of interest to other members.
