Meeting Details

Our DNA is what makes us uniquely us and as such, it is at the very heart of our privacy as individuals.  With the widespread growth of consumer DNA testing our “uniqueness” is partly on display for all to see and analyze.  DNA databases have well over 26 million people in them at this time.  Matching techniques have led to many genealogical breakthroughs, but the recent use of DNA databases by law enforcement agencies to find violent criminals and identify unknown human remains has brought into focus our need to understand what this means to us genetic genealogists.

Speaker Terry Maurice, began his interest in family history about 1970 on his mother’s Irish side and in 2017 began serious research of his father’s Ukrainian family.  It was 10 years ago that his interest in genealogy was rekindled with the advent of DNA genealogy.  He is now active in DNA testing and interpretation techniques and is presently the DNA Special Interest Group Coordinator for the Wellington County Branch.  Over the past three years, Terry has presented over 20 workshops that have been designed to assist family historians in using DNA results to further their family research.

This talk will outline how DNA is used by genealogists and law enforcement agencies, what this means to us as individuals, and what we can do to protect our privacy.
