Research and General Look-ups
If your ancestors lived in the County of Wellington, our volunteers will undertake a limited amount of research using online indexes, branch resources and visiting resource centres in Wellington County. Before submitting your request, there are a number of sources listed under the Resources in Wellington tab on our website that you may find useful. Also, we recommend that you do a search for the name of the person you are interested in by using TONI (The Ontario Name Index), a search engine on the Ontario Ancestors’ website.. The Branch has the majority of the names from the cemeteries in Wellington County listed on TONI and you can order and download the cemetery transcription directly from the Ontario Ancestors’ site.
Requests for Assistance
The Wellington County Branch receives many queries throughout the year. These requests are often related to cemetery lookups, obituary notices, tombstone photos, local directory information or research assistance. Whatever the research query, our volunteers are happy to provide assistance. We do not charge a fixed rate for our services and do not request advance payment, but as a non-profit organization, we would appreciate a donation to help maintain this service and offset any costs associated with your request (for example, printing/copying, mileage, etc). Donations can be made through Canada Helps on our “Support Wellington County Family History” page or directly at Canada Helps (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/50729). If you prefer, a cheque or money order may also be sent, payable to the branch, to Wellington County Branch – Ontario Ancestors, PO Box 1211, Guelph ON N1H 6N6. To submit a query, just complete the form below with as much information as possible (i.e. birth, death, marriage, name of spouse or family members, dates and locations) and hit “submit” or send an email directly to our Research Coordinator at wellingtonresearch@ogs.on.ca. A query form may also be printed from the link below and submitted by regular mail to the address indicated above.
Newsletter Queries
Members and non-members are welcome to submit queries for inclusion in our quarterly branch newsletter, Traces & Tracks. Queries are short messages about a specific person or family who lived in Wellington County and/or Guelph. Just submit the form below indicating that you wish your query to be printed in the newsletter and granting permission for the publication of your contact information or let us know if you would prefer that we keep your contact information unpublished and only use it to connect you with anyone who wishes to respond to your query. Queries are included in Traces & Tracks at the discretion of the editor.
Specialized and Extended Research
While we can assist you with a limited amount of research, you may need to hire a professional researcher for complex or extensive research. The Association of Professional Genealogists and the Archives of Ontario maintain lists of genealogical researchers. Please note the Wellington County Branch, Ontario Ancestors, assumes no responsibility for agreements or contracts between individuals.
