Life could be rough for 19th-century Irish immigrants to Ontario but the household of Edward Wicklow was rougher than most. From his early years as a tavern keeper in the wilds of Garafraxa, to the murder that sent him to Kingston and his final years in Grey County, Edward Wicklow’s life was nothing if not colourful. Full of surprising twists and unexpected turns, his story crosses the province, taking us from the dankest of prison cells to the office of the Prime Minister himself.  Relying on careful research and a variety of government and institutional sources, this presentation explores Wicklow’s fascinating life and reveals just how much information can be gathered about illiterate ancestors living on the margins of Victorian society.
